Olbia Cityguide
A long week-end in Sardinia!
August 2025
Close to the famous Costa Smeralda, with beautiful beaches, clear blue waters, and stunning nature, Olbia is a charming old town with lively squares, historic sites, and great local food. Whether you want to relax by the sea, explore ancient ruins, or just enjoy the laid-back vibe, it is a fantastic place to visit for an authentic Sardinian experience.

Before anything else…
Rent a car!! Based on more than 10 summers of experience in Sardinia, there is no Uber or equivalent, and taxis are not only costly but also take their time to pick you up. Public transportation is ok in the city of Olbia but not super reliable. So, if you want to fully enjoy the surroundings, rent a car and as early as possible to save money.
Pick your traveling dates carefully! As much as July and August can be boiling hot (around 35 degrees), the Winter season can be humid and depressing, with very few visitors and not many activities.
We haven’t been paid to mention any of the businesses in this article! It’s all based on our experience and memory.

The right hotel
Location, location, location!! Even though you could find many really charming hotels in the old city of Olbia, I strongly advise you to choose one by the beach to fully enjoy the Sardinian vibes! We visited quite a few during the last 10 years (and counting) and the following list is my top favorites!

The Pelican Beach Hotel Resort
Located in Pittulongu, the Pelican Beach Hotel is a cozy seaside retreat perfect for relaxing by the water. It offers comfortable rooms, stunning sea views, and easy access to beautiful beaches. With its friendly atmosphere and great location – less than 15min drive to Olbia city center, it’s an ideal spot for a laid-back Sardinian getaway. Request a room on the beach/garden side, much cosier than the main building!

The Sporting Hotel in Porto Rotondo, Sardinia, is a stylish boutique hotel offering a modern and relaxed atmosphere. Surrounded by lush gardens and just a short walk from the Porto Rotondo marina, it provides comfortable accommodations, a swimming pool, and easy access to the region’s beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife.

Set in the northern hills of Sardinia, this charming new boutique hotel overlooks the Gulf of Cugnana and is located very close to Porto Rotondo and beautiful beaches. Check our Instagram reel about this hotel!

Feel like a VIP! The Cervo Hotel in Porto Cervo is a luxury boutique hotel renowned for its elegant Mediterranean architecture and stunning coastal views. It offers sophisticated accommodations, great amenities, and a refined atmosphere, making it a popular choice for travelers seeking comfort and exclusivity in the heart of Costa Smeralda. Located in the center of the village of Porto Cervo, among luxury boutiques like Prada and Dior, the Hotel Cervo offers all the advantages of being a member of the Marriott group—perfect for crazy points collectors like us! Book with your points or long time in advance because it’s quite expensive.

The Sardinian delicacies
Sardinia’s food game is on another level!
Start with the crispy pane carasau (the Sardinian bread, impossible to stop eating eating it once you start), with their selection of ham and cheeses. Don’t forget the famoso malloreddus or the culurgione (gnocchi-shaped pasta), drizzled in savory sauces, or the succulent roasted meats cooked with a secret rustic vibe. You need to try the famous Sardinian pork roast and the bottarga (dried fish eggs) grated on pasta! The classic Italian dishes are also at their best, like the pizzas or like on the photo below, my favorite – spaghetti vongole!
During my numerous visits to Sardinia, I’ve never been disappointed by a restaurant, whatever the budget allowed! Below, the ones I visited more than once, worth the detour!
Located a bit outside of Olbia’s city center, close to Fausto Noce park, the restaurant Barbagia is actually one of my favorites (and where the photo of me is from). A simple and casual style restaurant, mostly visited by locals. The typical Sardinian cuisine served has always been consistently incredible! You need to try ABSOLUTELY the paccheri del pescatore (see photo below) and the gratinated mussels. To die for!

Ristorante Pizzeria Onorio e Donatella
Located near Porto Rotondo, this authentic, casual pizzeria & restaurant is renowned for its Sardinian grilled meats, particularly the pork, served on a large wooden platter. Keep in mind that the oven fire is wide open in the room, so it’s pretty hot inside!
Perfectly localised at the beginning of Corso Umberto I, by the port and the night market of Olbia, In Vino Veritas is the place for high-quality wine and some fine Sardinian nibbles with live music. Light dinner or festive aperitif, you decide.
Walking distance from the hotel Sulia mentioned earlier, Lu Stazzu offers a typical Sardinian dining experience. They have an incredible terrace to admire the sunset, while you’ll enjoy a big pre-selected dinner for a bargain. Have a look at the reel we made on Instagram!
If you have the budget for an amazing experience in a magical garden in Porto Cervo, go to Pedri Garden! Ask for a romantic table in the garden with a view of the sea and start with a fresh glass of Prosecco and a truffle focaccia!
You cannot spend a summer day in Sardinia without a gelato! One of the best I’ve tried around Olbia, the gelateria Villi is located in the center of the city and one of the most popular (be ready to queue a little bit). My favorite? Pistachio and peach with rose sorbet!!!

Shopping!
Olbia’s shopping scene is a delightful blend of local charm and artisan treasures. You’ll find cozy boutiques selling stylish Sardinian fashion, handcrafted jewelry, and unique souvenirs that capture the island’s spirit. Don’t expect big-name brands and big shopping streets, but more of a laid-back style.

Prada, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Dior, they are all located at the same place! Porto Cervo is located only 45 minutes away from Olbia, and is known for its high-end yachts, elegant marina, and upscale resorts. The town is renowned for its stunning scenery, upscale boutiques, and exquisite dining, making it a sought-after destination for luxury tourism.
Most of the time, the boutiques have a special Porto Cervo Collection. Irresistible!!

For a smaller budget, but still fun with Porto Cervo vibes, visit the boutique MC2 St Barth! They are famous for their messages t-shirts and cool beach bags!
Forgot to buy a souvenir?
No worries, the airport offers a nice range of souvenirs and gifts! It’s quite a small airport but has a few nice brands like MC2 St Barth. You can even buy some delicacies and wine.

Activities
BY THE BEACH…
Relax at Pittulongu Beach – Enjoy sunbathing, swimming, and beachside cafes on this gorgeous sandy stretch. Feeling more active? Rent a paddle or drive to Porto Pollo to take windsurfing lessons with a beautiful sunset view!
Take a boat trip to La Maddalena Archipelago – Discover stunning islands, crystal-clear waters, and secluded beaches. Some beaches are actually only accessible by boat!
Explore the impressive sea caves and grottoes of the coastline! Sea caves, also known as grottoes or caverns, are formed when waves erode the softer rock layers along the shoreline, creating openings that can stretch deep into the cliffs. Over time, the caves are sculpted into intricate shapes and patterns by the continuous pounding of the waves, resulting in a breathtaking display of natural architecture.
Hike in the Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area – Experience breathtaking nature and diverse wildlife.

IN THE CITY…
Visit the cosy night market at the beginning of Corso Umberto I, by the port. It’s not big, but you can find some treasures like cute fashion jewelry and home deco.
Not afraid of height? Have a tour on the big wheel. Beautifully illuminated at night, I suggest you do it by day to enjoy a better view.

Like history and old stones? Visit the Basilica di San Simplicio – Explore Olbia’s historic Romanesque church and learn about the city’s rich past.

Are you planning a trip to Olbia, but still have some doubts or some questions? Don’t hesitate to send me an email, and I will do my best to help you out 😊
